Family of Aaron^7 B. Van Vickle

B. Van Vickle (Evert^6, Evert^5, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 1807, Ohio. (It would appear that Van Vickles are descended from a common ancestor, Evert^5 Van Vickle. Since Aaron's age is not known precisely, it is possible that Aaron is a son of Evert^5, however, it is more likely that he is a grandson. There are several possibilities for Aaron's father among the sons of Evert^5 or perhaps a son of Evert not yet identified. Aaron, as of 26Nov2001 is placed here tentatively as a son of Evert^6 based on recent research supplied by Brian Christensen. See note below.)

Married: Catherine Mace (b. 1811 in Bath County, Kentucky and d. 6 December 1855 and bur. Nagel Cem., Patch Grove, Grant, Wisconsin) 1832, Pike County, Missouri

Children:
1. Jemima^8 Van Vickle, b. 1833, Missouri
2. Jesse^8 Van Vickle, b. abt. 1835, Missouri
3. Susan^8 Van Vickle, b. 1837, Missouri
4. Austus^8 Van Vickle, b. 1838, Hancock County, Illinois
5. Edson^8 Van Vickle, b. 1843, Hancock County, Illinois
6. Walter^8 M. Van Vickle, b. abt. 1846, Hancock County, Illinois

(There may have been another brother, John^8 Van Vickle, b. abt 1845, IL--given his listing in the 1870 US census in the household of Amos and Susan [Van Vickle] Franklin below.)

Parents:
Aaron's parents are Evert^6 and Sarah (White) Van Vickle ; grandparents are most likely Evert and ___ Van Wicklen
Catherine's parents are John and Permelia (Delay) Mace

Background information:

Aaron^7 Van Vickle
(Evert^6, Evert^5, Frederick^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), b. 1807, Ohio and d. 3 March 1848 at Hancock County, IL. He married Catherine Mace (b. Apr 1811 in Bath County, Kentucky and d. 6 December 1855; bur. Nagel Cem., Patch Grove, Grant, Wisconsin) 23 Oct 1832 in Pike County, Missouri. (An Aaron Van Wickle served in Matson's Independent Company of Missouri in the War of 1832. He served from June 13 to June 20, 1832. This might be Aaron Van Vickle with the name misspelled. More documentation is needed to be certain. -information gathered by Brian Christensen)

According to 30 Jan 2016 email from Brian Chistensen, Aaron B. Van Vickle served in the Black Hawk War with his brother-in-law Adam Mase in Matson’s Indpt Co of MO Mtd Rangers in the Way of 1832 from Jun 13 to Jun 20. He appears in only one census record: 1840 Census Hancock County, IL, page 216: Aaron Vanwinkle, 1 male under 4, 1 male 20 to 30. 2 females under 5, 1 female 5 to 10, 1 female 20 to 30. Total of 6 people. Engaged in agriculture.

Catherine and her parents left Bath County, KY for Missouri around 1816-1818. Catherine's sister was Sally (Mace) Hicklin who lived to be almost 100 years old when she died in 1898. Her obit indicaed she was the daughter of John and Permilla (Delay) Mace. It seems that the Delay family left Bath County, KY and moved to Ross County, OH (The marriage place of Evert and Sally (White) Van Vickle.). Some of the Delay children then moved to Vermilion County, IL (another residence for Evert), and Ripley Co., IN (near Jennings County which was another residence of Evert.) There was also one Delay family in Hancock County, IL which is where Aaron died. Sally (Mace) Hicklin lived with her husband, Moses Hicklin in Jennings Co., IN at the same time that Evert Van Vickle lived there (1820-28). All of this may be circumstantial but families did travel together from place to place. This adds a little weight to Aaron being a son of Evert. --courtesy, Brian Christensen via 29 Nov 2002 email

Aaron died without a will, so his brother-in-law, John S. Jennifer handled the administration of his estate. The paperwork, located by Brian Christensen in the Carthage, Hancock County, IL courthouse gave exact date of death and Aaron's middle initial (B.). Since Aaron died intestate there was no will. Brian has obtained papers indicating the appraisal of his property, the auction prices, and several notes from creditors. The itemized doctor's bill of 1848 was for two weeks of fever powders, salts of senna, and cream of tarter which apparently was not enough to keep him alive. The doctor charged $15.25. --courtesy, Brian Christensen via 29 Nov 2002 email

Children: Jemima^8 Van Vickle, b. 4 October 1833, Missouri and d. 14 June 1909, Wyalusing, Grant, Wisconsin, bur. Information on Aaron's parentage, courtesy of Brian Christensen by email 17 November 2001

Aaron Van Vickle married Catherine Mace in Pike Co., MO in 1832. By 1840 they were living in Hancock Co., IL. Catherine was head of the household on the 1850 census of Hancock Co., IL. She moved her family to Grant Co., WI and was buried there in 1855. I have wondered why a widow would move her family to Wisconsin. I recently learned that Catherine (Mace) Van Vickle lived near her sister's family in Wisconsin. Sally Mace married Moses Hicklin and they moved from Missouri to Wisconsin. I found a book on the Hicklin family and learned that Moses Hicklin had a farm in Jennings County, IN. Evert Van Vickle also had a farm in Jennings Co., IN and appeared there on the 1820 census. Maybe Catherine Mace met her husband Aaron Van Vickle through her brother-in-law Moses Hicklin.

In my recent research in the Jennings Co., IN courthouse I found that "E. Vanvickle bought land Sept 6, 1820 NWq, section 6, 165.96 acres. I also have Evert Vanvickle deed to Benjamin Lewis, August 28, 1838. this deed mentions Evert's wife sally. I also have some deeds and wills for various Hicklins that were living in Jennings Co., IN.

I'm leaning toward the theory that Aaron Van Vickle was a son of Evert. The 1840 census in Hancock Co., IL places Aaron's birth between 1810 and 1820. The 1820 census in Jennings Co., IN for Evert shows that he had three boys under 10 (Aaron, Enock b. 1814, and William, b. 1816). The 1830 census for Vermillion Co., IL for Evert has 2 boys 15-20 (Aaron, Enoch, b. 1814), 1 boy 10 -15 (William) and 1 boy 5-10 (Jackson).

The biographical reference to Enoch Van Vickle said he was the "second of 5 sons" of Evert Van Vickle. That would suggest that he had an older brother--perhaps Aaron. Perhaps I will never have proof of the ancestors of Aaron Van Vickle, but the evidence suggests that his wife had connection through Jennings Co., so it is possible that he also had connections to those Van Vickles in Jennings County. --Brian Christensen

(The above information was forwarded to Harry Macy, Jr. with this reply by email on 26 Nov 2001. Thanks for sharing Brian Christansen's excellent discussion of the placement of his Aaron Van Vickle. I think his conclusion is the correct one. Aaron has to be a grandson of Evert Van Vickle, Sr. because the surname spelling is unique to that Evert and his descendents, and someone of Aaron's age could only be in the generation of Evert Sr's grandchildren--he's too young to be a son and too old to be a great grandson. It also appears unlikely that there is a place for Aaron in the families of Evert Sr's other sons, nor do the other sons have the geographic link to Indiana and Illinois. --Harry Macy Jr.)
